The New York Mets are in need of a new GM after firing GM Jared Porter shortly after he was hired to be Sandy Alderson’s senior lieutenant under new owner Steve Cohen. Porter was sacked shortly after admitting in a report by ESPN’s Mina Kimes and Jeff Passan that he sent unsolicited sexually explicit footage to a reporter in 2016 while working at the Cubs front office.
Cohen acted quickly by firing Porter hours after his actions came to light:
Alderson said on Tuesday the Mets were not going to hire a replacement for Porter in the short term. But whenever the team decides to hire a new GM, the Mets can go over the details of the research they just completed before hiring Porter. As such, the other finalists are likely to reappear as candidates. Here’s a look at how things might turn out.
The Clear Favorite: Zack Scott
This would allow the most seamless transition. That’s because Scott was a finalist for the GM position and ended up getting hired as an Assistant GM under Porter. This means that he has already been working for a few weeks in the heights of the Mets front office. Additionally, according to some accounts of the research process, Scott was the finalist behind Porter.
Scott, 43, has spent the previous 17 years working in the Red Sox front office, during which he immersed himself in analytics – which is a high priority skill for highly placed MLB executives these days. these days – as well as cutting his teeth under Theo Epstein for some of those years.
Once again, Scott is already with the organization and his record is such that the Mets have seriously considered hiring him as general manager. Since being hired in December, that means Scott has also played a role in recent major decisions on the Mets roster – which means, most notably, the trade of superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor. Considering all of this, it would be a surprise if he didn’t step up to Porter’s replacement role.
The other candidates
The remaining reported finalists for the GM position were Michael Hill, former president of the Marlins, and Billy Owens, assistant general manager of the A.
Hill, who turns 50 in March, spent more than two decades with the Marlins, but the two teams went their separate ways after the 2020 season despite Miami making the playoffs. Most recently, Hill had served as president of baseball operations with the Marlins, meaning he had held a higher role than any of his fellow finalists for the Mets general manager position.
Owens, 49, played seven seasons in the minors and is trained as a scout. Thanks to his years with the A, he is also able to combine analyzes in this scouting fund. Owens also previously worked with Alderson just prior to his return to the Mets. There is no question that Owens has the strongest track record of any CEO candidate.
Given that the Mets still have plans to make another flagship addition this winter – George Springer or Trevor Bauer, for example – a quick decision seems likely.
