DETROIT (AP) – General Motors recalls more than 368,000 pickup trucks and other trucks worldwide after 19 reports of fires caused by engine block heating cords.
The recall concerns certain Chevrolet Silverado 4500, 5500 and 6500 2019 trucks, as well as the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 Chevrolet from 2017 to 2019. All are equipped with 6.6 liter diesel engines the block heats up in extremely cold weather.
GM is asking customers not to use an engine heater until ordered again. The company said on Friday that the electric heating cord or the terminals connecting it to the heater could cause a short circuit and failure. This can cause fires. No injuries were reported.
GM is still trying to find the cause of the problem and to fix a fix. The company began investigating the problem in December and found that a fire could occur if a block heater coolant leak was formed and the coolant came into contact with the cable terminals. or if the cable was damaged.
The recall involves approximately 324,000 US trucks.
GM started informing dealers on April 26 and asked them to stop selling the trucks until the repairs were completed. No date has yet been set to inform the owners.
