GM appears to be setting the stage for the United States to challenge Norway’s leadership in electric vehicle adoption with a new Super Bowl commercial featuring Will Ferrell.
In recent years, several major automakers have used Super Bowl ads to promote their electric vehicles and electrification plans.
Last year, GM used its Super Bowl commercial to advertise its electric Hummer.
Now GM will once again promote its plans to go electric in its Super Bowl commercial, but it seems to be taking a different and fun approach.
The automaker has yet to reveal the announcement, but has released a series of teasers that are mostly just Will Ferrell hating Norway:

With all the Olafs, skiing and sweater weather all year round, why is actor and EV enthusiast Will Ferrell so obsessed with Norway? The answer to the question posed in those big game teasers is coming soon, but it has something to do with Ferrell – and General Motors – wanting everyone to be in EVs. Maybe someone should tell him that GM has 30 EV models coming up by 2025.
The automaker hasn’t elaborated further than that, but we have a theory on the subject of the ad.
Taking Electrek
It looks like GM is going to pull on the patriotic strings of Americans, which is not a bad idea for a Super Bowl commercial, and use Ferrell to jokingly present Norway as “the enemy” in the competition for the race. to the adoption of EVs.
If that’s the idea, I really like it.
Obviously, it’s a race with arguably an insurmountable lead already for Norway.
Norway already accounts for more than 60% of new electric passenger car sales, around 20 times the market share than in the United States.
But if you want to get higher EV adoption, you have to aim for the best, and Norway is the best.
Even though the ad campaign only mentions Norway’s EV adoption rate, it’s a big win, as I don’t think most people know it or even think it’s a possibility at this point.
This would reinforce the idea that electric vehicles are the future.
Also, if GM can circulate America’s competitiveness in electric vehicles, it could be really exciting because, while Norway has a huge lead, it doesn’t produce electric vehicles. The United States is doing it and GM plans to be part of it.
