The search bar in Gmail is already a powerful tool, especially when using advanced filters, and will now show related email aliases in the results.
When you search for an email address in Gmail, we will now show all emails associated with that specific address and any aliases that it is part of.
An e-mail alias is simply an “alternate address for receiving mail” which is often used for: official name changes, preferred names and following changes of brands, acquisitions or subsidiaries.
The results are taken from the to, from, cc, and bcc lines, as well as if they appear anywhere in the body of the message. Google explains that this feature will allow users to not have to keep an ongoing list of changes to emails. Labels are not affected.
With this change, the search will be easier and the results more complete, as users will not need to remember all of someone’s aliases and run multiple searches for each.
That said, users will still be able to search for exact accounts by using quotes around the address in question. Email aliases in Gmail search are deployed in the following workspace levels:
Available for Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus, as well as G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education and Nonprofits customers
