GMC’s second electric pickup – after the Hummer EV pickup – will be Probably Calling itself the GMC Sierra EV, but as of yet, GMC isn’t offering any details about it, such as the name, although GMC has confirmed that it will be a “full-size pickup”.

It will likely be the competitor to GMC’s F-150 Lightning, and so the thing to watch out for is the lineup, yes, but also the price, because the F-150 Lightning will start at just under $ 40,000, not bad for a world in which it is the average price of a new car, period. That, however, is for the “commercial-oriented” F-150 Lightning barebones, while the consumer-oriented F-150 Lightning XLT will start at $ 52,974. Which is a long way of saying I guess GMC will be aiming for something at least in the fifties; GMC doesn’t comment anyway.

“No, no real surprises there… from a GMC perspective,” Duncan Aldred, GMC Global Vice President. said monday, referring to the price of the F-150 Lightning. Other things GMC hasn’t talked about: specs, where the truck will be built and when it will debut. Still, understandably, Aldred said he’s convinced GMC is poised to dominate the full-size EV truck space, according to CNBC.

“I am very confident that GMC will be a big winner in this space,” Duncan Aldred, GMC’s global manager, said Monday at a digital media event. Aldred said the vehicle was “quite advanced” in its planning, but declined to disclose the vehicle’s schedule.

I’m not at all convinced that, in general, pickup trucks are the best application of battery-powered electric powertrains, given what towing distance is likely to suffer. But GMC, Ford, Tesla, Chevrolet and RAM all do electric trucks, so sooner or later we’ll find out how wrong I am.
