As an extension of the less-performing Super Cruise hands-free driving aid, Ultra Cruise will use a suite of sensors including cameras, radar and lidar to provide the vehicle with a 360-degree perception that GM says will enable it. do the following:

  • Provide users with information based on their experience with the system through an all-new digital signage
  • Respond to permanent traffic control systems
  • Follow internal shipping routes
  • Keep the direction ; obey the speed limit
  • Support for automatic and on-demand lane change
  • Supports left and right turns
  • Support near object avoidance
  • Support parking in residential driveways

When it launches in a Cadillac model in 2023, GM says it will be compatible with more than 2 million miles of pre-mapped and certified U.S. roads that will stretch to 3.4 million miles of network.

“We believe that the combination of different sensors, or the fusion of sensors, leads to the most robust hands-free driver assistance system for our customers,” said Doug Parks, GM product development manager.

Park’s comment contrasts with Elon Musk’s point of view, who avoided lidar and long-range radar for Tesla’s similar full self-driving feature, which now relies solely on cameras and sensors at short-range ultrasound for its operation. Musk once said that “anyone relying on lidar is doomed” and thinks too much data is unnecessarily confusing for ADAS computers.

Even with the advanced capability, GM qualifies Ultra Cruise as a Level 2 Autonomous System, with Level 5 being full range, meaning the driver must monitor its operation and be ready to take over in an emergency.

Mercedes-Benz, Audi and other automakers are also planning to use lidar in ADAS Level 2 and beyond systems that they will launch in the coming years, while the fully autonomous vehicles deployed by the Cruise division of GM employ several lidar units each.
