Last week everyone was obsessed with the “Right Up Our Alley” drone video that made us all nostalgic for the bowling alleys. Friday night, a vice president of the drone company DJI tweeted this video of a drone flight through a nearly empty movie theater in Minnesota, and I don’t know about you, but I really miss going to the movies. This video makes that desire about 100 times worse.
According to his YouTube page, the video is from SkyCandy and is a unique overview of Plymouth Grand from the Mann Theaters in Plymouth, Minnesota. It was filmed with a DJI Air Unit and Rotor Riot Cinewhoop.
The video is a little over a minute long, but the drone takes us through the lobby – after being greeted by the front doors by a masked theater employee – where people decide what to see and buy tickets “for. the 7:30 p.m. show, ”Depending on audio. There is some very familiar background music playing in the part of the lobby that I couldn’t quite identify, but it was totally okay.
Then we hover over the concession stand where a couple grabs a bucket of that overpriced movie popcorn, then we pass the bar where we can hear the bartender saying to his boss, “name him, I’ve got him. seen “before walking down a long hallway into one of the actual theaters.
There are so many empty seats in this cinema that it actually got a little sad – but then we briefly hear a familiar sound from before the movie: someone forgot to mute their iPhone. Coarse! But funny. We end up watching and then flying “into” the movie screen where guess what is playing (I thought for a second that it might be Principle, but no): The beginning of the video we are watching. Wild!
For those of us who haven’t been to the movies since social distancing began last year, this video is a welcome and nostalgic reminder of the joys of seeing a movie on the big screen. One more thing to put on the “things I’m going to do when everything gets back to normal”, which hopefully will be sooner or later.
