God of War has been patched to take full advantage of the PlayStation 5, and the results are phenomenal. For those who need a recap, the game ran at 30fps at 1080p on a standard PlayStation 4, but the PS4 Pro offered two options: resolution or frame rate. In Resolution mode, the game used checkerboard rendering techniques to produce a clean 4K image at 30fps – or you can lower the resolution to 1080p and run it at 60fps in Framerate mode.
The problem is, on at least a PS4 Pro, the frame rate rarely hits 60fps, instead hovering between 40fps and 50fps. Playing on a PS5 stuck the framerate at 60fps, but you still had to deal with a 1080p image. Now, the new patch lets you play 4K checkerboard at 60 frames per second with no noticeable dips or fluctuations. Image quality is razor-sharp and performance never falters.
The comparison video above shows how cool this upgrade is – it really looks wonderful to run on a PS5 now. We sincerely hope that more developers will follow in these footsteps and upgrade their PS4 classics so that they can sing along on Sony’s new console. This is a great thing.
