Cory Barlog has revealed he won’t be returning to helm Santa Monica Studio’s upcoming Nordic heavyweight God of War: Ragnarök. Instead, the latest God of War installment will feature series veteran Eric Williams in the director’s seat, while Barlog works on other unannounced projects.

In an interview aired as part of the recent PlayStation Showcase, Santa Monica Studios duo Cory Barlog and Eric Willaims confirmed the leadership reshuffle on the new title, explaining that the change of director has always been a hallmark of how things are done in the studio.

“It’s always been a tradition here in Santa Monica, to change directors through games,” said Williams, who has worked at the studio since 2004. “We’ve had great success with that. Cory is the only director out there. repetition and, you know, rightly so: he’s pretty darn good at what he does.

Barlog further expanded on the studio’s decision to switch directors between iterations of the franchise by talking more about the need for new perspectives and the impact that making a game like God of War can have on a person.

“The important thing for us is to have a new perspective each time, but also a new pair of legs in the sense that you are really exhausted at the end of one of these things. So you have to cheat on someone. others do it – like him. “

Elsewhere in the interview, Barlog was hesitant to give any insight into what he would do instead of working on God of War: Ragnarök. Asked about the projects he’s working on, the creative director of Sony Santa Monica studio said, “Oh, you’d love to, wouldn’t you, you’d want me to spread the wick and tell you everything that’s going on. going on right now. Actually, we’re doing a bunch of stuff, it’s really exciting … but I don’t really have much that I can talk about in particular at the moment, mainly because we’re really focused on God of War Ragnarök. “
