Goldberg is set to face Drew McIntyre for the WWE Title at the Royal Rumble after a shocking comeback on “Monday Night Raw”.
The much-maligned 54-year-old veteran lost the Universal Title to Braun Strowman at WrestleMania 36 and has appeared for the first time since to face the Scotsman.
He joined a host of icons as he returned to WWE for a special episode of Legends of Monday Night Raw – but the ex-WCW star had more than just an appearance in mind.
McIntyre was defending his title against compatriot Keith Lee in the main event of the series.
The pair had an epic battle, with the Briton bombarding his opponent through the announcement table as he also managed to fight after being caught with a Spanish fly on the top rope.
Ultimately, it was Mcintyre who prevailed by landing a Claymore Kick for the win.
However, when he thought his night was over, Goldberg’s music suddenly hit as he walked to the ring and grabbed a microphone.
Goldberg began by congratulating McIntyre and said he doesn’t get the respect his talent deserves. But he went on to claim that the champion only looked at Legends as wrestlers out of their prime and believed he was better than them.
Goldberg then challenged him to a title match at the Rumble on January 31. McIntyre responded by saying it would be like fighting his own father.
And that caused Goldberg, who angrily sent the 35-year-old crashing into the mat with a huge push while the show was off the air.
Goldberg came out of retirement to return to WWE in 2017, but he has only wrestled four times since, receiving heavy criticism for the quality of those performances as well as the huge salaries he received.
Although he is only part-time, he is said to have received a seven-figure pay for his two previous appearances in Saudi Arabia.
The first took place in June 2019 when Goldberg lost to the Undertaker at Super ShowDown in a disastrous fight full of commendable mistakes.
He nearly inflicted serious injuries on the Undertaker with a failed attempt by Jackhammer while also suffering from a concussion.
Fans were furious afterwards, and that anger escalated when he crushed the hugely popular “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt at Super ShowDown in February to become the Universal Champion.
He was next to face Roman Reigns in ‘Mania before the Big Dog retired from the show and was replaced by Strowman, who beat Goldberg quickly.
The WCW legend is said to have retired after his recent disappointing outings, but he shattered that theory by revealing he was under contract with WWE until 2023.
