On the post-Raw edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said the decision to go with WWE Champion Drew McIntyre vs. Goldberg for the Royal Rumble was made on Saturday.

Goldberg had been preparing a match against universal champion Roman Reigns since early December. He was scheduled to defend the Universal title against Reigns at WrestleMania last year until Reigns retired. Braun Strowman faced Goldberg instead and defeated him for the title.

On Monday on Raw, Goldberg appeared at the end of the show to challenge McIntyre after his successful title defense against Keith Lee, claiming the champion did not respect the legends. McIntyre messed it up and said that facing Goldberg would be like facing his father. Goldberg pushed him down as the show went on hold.

Goldberg, 54, has not wrestled since the aforementioned Strowman match. Last August, he said his deal with WWE called for two matches a year and would run until 2023.
