We all know it wasn’t that bad for Hurts. He hit Watkins on the money for the aforementioned completion of 91 yards. He placed a ball in a very narrow window to Dallas Goedert on the play just before executing a stealth QB for Philly’s only touchdown. He had an absolute dime in Jalen Reagor for a touchdown sadly wiped out by the receiver’s withdrawal (more on that to come).
But Hurts finished the day completing just 52.2% of his passes for zero touchdowns and an 80.0 passer rating. Outside of the Watkins game, he recorded just 4.5 yards per attempt.
Hurts left a number of plays on the field. He couldn’t connect with DeVonta Smith on a few deep hits. The first of them came on a play where Hurts rolled right and had a completely clean pocket but ultimately missed the catcher, who had a step on defense.
Bruce Arians – Tampa Bay Buccaneers contacted CB Richard Sherman
A week after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed starting cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting on the injured list, coach Bruce Arians said general manager Jason Licht contacted veteran cornerback Richard Sherman to assess his interest.
“We could see,” Arians said on Monday, a day after his team beat the Atlanta Falcons 48-25 to go 2-0. “He also has other things to do. Just a question of, ‘I coach those we have and I leave [Licht] handle the rest. ‘ We’re also going to kick some other guys’ tires. But it’s just a question of, ‘No, we’ll talk and see, and if it’s the right choice, it’s the right choice and we’ll move on.’ “
49ers Week 2 Studs and Duds
DeMeco Ryans:
Ryans had his hands full this week against an Eagles team that scored 32 points the week before. What stood out the most about Ryans’ game was that he did a great job preparing for Hurts and playing down the big game. Over the years, the 49ers have struggled with moving quarterbacks. (which most teams do), but that was another story on Sunday. The Eagles averaged 6 yards per play (328 total yards on 55 plays), but 91 of them came on a single connection between Hurts and Quez Watkins. Taking that game off the defensive stats sheet, the 49ers defense allowed 4.3 yards per game.
Ryans’ career as a defensive coordinator is off to a promising start.

Brian Sausa writes: “In a rematch of the NFC title game a few seasons ago, the Packers will be visiting the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium. Bettors see this game as an even match on paper as the Niners are the three-point favorites across the board. San Francisco have lost both coaches coordinators, but still have Kyle Shanahan and a full roster on both sides of the ball. Green Bay’s struggles along the offensive line could be exposed again, which would help alleviate the enormous disadvantage the Niners have at quarterback and on offense in general. I sided with Rodgers and Green Bay in so many difficult situations, including him on his way home to northern California to play against the Niners, and I fell flat. Have I learned my lesson? Nope. Take Green Bay and the points, or wait for that line to rise before supporting the Packers to stay in this game just when everyone thinks they’re about to go down.
