Glynn County Dispatch 911 reported to the Coast Guard a capsized vessel – the Golden Ray, which carries vehicles – to Saint-Simons Sound around 2 am, the statement said.
By the end of Sunday morning, 20 people had been rescued from the ship, which had a crew of 24, the Coast Guard said.
The images showed a trail of smoke emanating from the ship, which, according to the Coast Guard, was "lying on its side".
There was a fire on board, announced the release of the Coast Guard. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
Several agencies, including the Department of Natural Resources of Georgia and the Glynn County Fire Department, are involved in the incident.
