Five people were injured by a fleeing golf cart Friday at the opening of the US Open at Pebble Beach.

A salesman was loading his golf cart when a box fell on the vehicle's throttle and propelled it into a group of people, said a report from the California Highway Patrol.

Four spectators and the seller were injured by the cart before the seller could stop him, the police said. The incident occurred at 10:15 am Pacific time near the 16th fairway.

The game had been going on for about two hours when the incident occurred.

"Unfortunately, during the second race today, a golf cart on the 16th hole was injured, three spectators and a salesman were injured and required medical attention." We will continue to monitor their conditions. "said the USGA in a statement.

The USGA statement contradicts the police, who said five people were injured, including the vendor.
