BALTIC, CT (WFSB) – A golfer and a horse were injured in two bobcat attacks on CT Thursday morning.
One of them occurred at the Mohegan Sun Golf Course, on Dows Lane, according to Travis Irons, head of emergency communications operations for the Quinebaug Valley.
The attack took place at Hole 7.
"He jumped on his back, he managed to fight him with a golf club.He thought he'd died and that he was walking a few steps away, he ended up jumping on him "Sgt." Chris Dwyer.
The Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection said that he had reacted, located and euthanized the bobcat.
He said the bobcat will be tested for rabies.
The injured victim had to be transported around 9 am in an ambulance at a local hospital.
Irons said the golfer had suffered only minor injuries.
The animal also reportedly attacked a horse near the golf course earlier in the day.
"I was nervous and I just wanted to protect my pet and I ran after it with a shovel, I threw the shovel and yelled at it then I went under my trailer on horseback and I did not know what to do, but I called someone called 911, "said Loree Osowski, of Baltic.
She recounted that the attack on her horse, Bella, had occurred around 8 o'clock. She thought the horse had fired back.
"I think she was making fun of that because when he came out of the area where the horses are, he was limping a lot," Osowski said.
DEEP officials stated that the horse suffered neck and eye lacerations and was treated by a veterinarian.
"She had about 16 stitches and one test, her eye is fine," Osowski said.
The horse had received all her vaccinations and she had received booster shots, but it had to go.
The vet said that if she had not been vaccinated and had contracted the rabies virus, she would probably be dead.
Officials said lynxes rarely attack people, and when they do, they are often rabid.
"During my 20 years with DEEP, I only had three bobcats, they are extremely aggressive, they are extremely vicious when they have the rabies virus, the incidents are associated with a sick animal." said Dwyer.
"This is the first time I've ever heard of this, which is very unfortunate, unusual," said Philip Krick, General Manager of Mohegan Sun Golf Club.
When the attack occurred, everyone was brought off the course immediately.
Bobcats are shy and secret animals. attacks on humans are extremely rare. The last reported incident took place in Bozrah at the end of August 2014. It was determined that the animal had a positive test for rabies.
