Bryson DeChambeau tested positive for COVID-19 before leaving the United States for Tokyo and will miss the Olympics. He will be replaced by Patrick Reed.

DeChambeau, US Open champion last year, becomes the most prominent athlete to test positive for the virus. He says he is “deeply disappointed not to be able to compete in the US team’s Olympics.”

Reed was scheduled to undergo tests on Sunday and Monday to qualify for competition in Tokyo. The first round at Kasumigaseki Country Club is scheduled for Thursday. Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, is now the only two-time Olympian in the sport, which was reintroduced to the program in 2016.

The United States continued to rack up medals, with Emma Weyant taking silver and Hali Flickinger taking bronze. The Americans won five of nine possible medals in the first three swimming finals, including a gold medal by Chase Kalisz in the men’s 400 IM.
