Gonzaga (27-2) spent two weeks at No. 1 after defeating the Blue Devils to win the Maui Invitational in November. Mark Few's team fell after a defeat in December at Tennessee was followed by another player in North Carolina, but has since won 18 straight games.

Virginia won a place in second place and got 15 first-place votes, while the Blue Devils dropped to third after losing at home to North Carolina in a match that saw the star of the first Zion Williamson's year injuring his right knee in the first minute – complete with the image of his left foot ripping off his shoe as he fell to the ground.

The Tar Heels climbed to fifth place behind Kentucky. Michigan State, Tennessee, Houston, Michigan and Marquette complete the top 10.

The No. 1 pre-season in Kansas dropped to 15th place, the lowest ranking of the Jayhawks since January 2014.

This week's survey was completed with three new additions. Wofford is ranked at number 24 for the first appearance of the AP survey in the program's history. The Terriers (24-4) are 16-0 in the South Conference and their only losses were suffered by teams from the UNC, Oklahoma, Kansas and Mississippi Power Conference.

Cincinnati and Washington both returned to the poll, while Louisville, Iowa State and reigning national champion Villanova, escaped.
