Starting today, Google smart speakers like the Nest Hub and Nest Mini will have a new option called “Guest Mode.” When activated by saying “Ok Google, turn on guest mode,” the speaker will act a little more like a public Google Assistant terminal and a little less like your own personal assistant.
When guest mode is activated, queries are no longer saved in your Google account and some personal data such as your calendar will not be displayed. However, the speaker will still be able to do the basics like setting timers, answering questions, and listening to music.
However, don’t think that it works as a way to secure your personal data: turning off guest mode is as easy as asking the speaker to do it. The idea apparently is that if you have guests in your house (which, for now: don’t), they won’t accidentally see your calendar and so on.
The functionality is not as robust as the Incognito mode on your Chrome browser. While interactions aren’t recorded, speakers should still be logged into your account so they can continue to access any integrations you’ve set up with music, smart lights, and more.
In other words, it’s not a good solution for Airbnb hosts. Google has a home mode for its speakers, but it is primarily intended for hotels.
When you exit guest mode, your requests will be saved to your Google account again. But as the company announced last August, it no longer saves audio recordings by default, unless you actively choose to allow it to do so.
