Does a patent application mean that a company is particularly interested in a technology? No.
Does every company that makes phones at least have fun with a foldable model? Yes, probably.
It is difficult to know from a series of rough drawings and technical details filed with the USPTO the seriousness with which a company takes these plans. Honestly, most companies naturally tend to take a wait-and-see approach to technology.
A new patent application spotted by Patently Mobile probably falls into the latter camp. After all, Google outsources much of its pixel and hardware to other device makers, including not creating its own screens. Nevertheless, the ranking shows a device that folds a bit like a wallet.
"MANAGE THE NEUTRAL AXIS OF FOLDING DISPLAY WITH THIN AND HIGH LAYERS" is quite simple at first glance, especially when compared to the already announced and soon to be launched offers from Samsung and Huawei (without forget the Xiaomi concept that excited). This places Google in the same boat as Apple and Motorola, however, as companies that, at the very least, have flirted with the idea of a collapsible product.
Google, in particular, has been included in the category, at least from a software point of view. Last year, the company jointly announced with Samsung that it would support devices such as the Galaxy Fold via Android. So, someone, somewhere deep in the bowels of Mountain View, probably played with concepts.
In terms of consumers, of course, foldable items remain a curiosity, with prices hovering around $ 2,000, double the cost of other flagship products. The relatively low entrance barriers have long been part of the Pixel range of attractions. So it's hard to imagine that Google is rushing into a $ 2,000 fold this year.
