Google announced Tuesday that it would begin posting ads on the home page of its mobile application later this year, with the goal of increasing the technology giant's advertising revenue.
"Discovery ads are now available to all advertisers around the world, even if they are open to discovering your products and services," said the company during its Marketing Live event for advertisers. citing a recent survey showing that over 75% of consumers "like to make unexpected discoveries while shopping".
The ads will appear in the "Discover" feature of the Google home page, in a news feed through which users can browse. Ads are configured through an algorithm to customize articles, products, and other content.
"Discovery provided us with an excellent opportunity to easily scale up our brands beyond what we thought possible with Google," said Daniel Pahl, vice president of media and acquisitions at TechStyle. "We are now able to inspire a whole new audience to action."
Beyond the home page, Google will begin later this year by placing ads containing up to eight images in its search results in a new "Ad Gallery" feature that, according to the company, provides "a more interactive visual format".
The ads will appear soon on the Google Shopping homepage, which web users will be able to customize and filter "based on their preferences and the brands they like."
Oliver Heckmann, vice president of engineering for the travel and shopping sectors, told Reuters on Monday that the new changes would make it easier for consumers to research and purchase new products.
The news comes from the concern of investors in Alphabet, Google's parent company, that companies like Amazon and Instagram are attracting disproportionate numbers of online shoppers to their platforms and far from Google.
