Google now offers three car experiences, and all of them are seeing updates. Most important is an upcoming “Hey Google, pay for gas” command, while Android Auto gets new multimedia and connectivity features.
Once live, you can go to a gas station and say “Ok Google, pay gas” to Android Auto, your Android phone, or in the future, assisted driving mode. Select your pump number, then use Google Pay for the transaction. After selecting a fuel grade, you can start refueling.
This is currently being tested at Exxon and Mobil stations in the United States. Support at Shell, Conoco, Phillips 66 and 76 is “coming soon”. Of course, people will continue to interact physically with the pump, but this is a step forward in reducing physical interactions in a high demand area. Google says last year helped develop this feature with expected support at more than 32,500 gas stations in the United States.
Meanwhile, Android Auto gets a handful of features. On the entertainment front, Google will show personalized media recommendations. They are accessible by a new music icon which is located next to the existing player controls in the bottom bar. This opens a carousel of “media playlists for your device” from streaming apps, Assistant news, podcasts, and more.
Additionally, users will be able to choose which app will open when Android Auto is launched. Google Maps or other navigation apps are currently the default, but any experience can be selected in the future.
The connectivity improvements in Android Auto begin with the ability to choose between SIM cards when making calls and sending messages. Meanwhile, “Work Profile” support will allow you to view personal and work silo calendar messages and events on your phone.
