Google Camera 6.2 adds dark mode settings, prepares "Measure" and "Cheetah" modes [APK Insight]

The latest version of Google Camera began to be deployed earlier this week with some visual changes, including a dark mode for the settings. Google Camera 6.2 also reveals work on a measurement tool, while the development of "Cheetah" continues.

About APK InsightIn this 'APK Insight' article, we have decompiled the latest version of an app that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we are able to see different lines of code in this indication of possible future features. Do not forget that Google may or may not offer these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We will, however, try to allow those who are about to be finished to show you how they will appear in case they are shipped. With that in mind, read on.

Measuring mode

After being removed from Tango for augmented reality, Google last June updated its Measure application to work with ARCore. Existing features include altitude and distance capture, with an option to save measurements directly to your clipboard or as an image with a virtual ruler.

Instead of a separate application, Google could integrate the utility directly into the camera application. This would look like the addition of Google Lens from last year and could appear in the same "More" tab. It is unclear if this would still require the Measure application to be installed and therefore only a shortcut, or if the feature will be directly integrated.

cheetah

Since several versions, Google is working on a Time Lapse mode, called "Cheetah". Google's implementation is to record video at a higher speed and complements the existing Slow Motion feature.

Dark mode settings

Like all apps that precede Android Q, Google Camera 6.2 now respects Night Mode in Pie's development options. Of course, the UI of the camera is already dark, with this support only reflected in the settings where the background is dark gray with blue accents for the headers section and the scales. (Thank you Gab.)

Meanwhile, the Advanced menu changes from a carrot icon to a horizontal overflow that better reflects the fact that the new options do not slide online, but rather lead users to a new page.

User interface in Panorama mode

Panorama in Google Camera 6.2 now allows you to enable / disable audio recording instead of placing it in the upper left corner (in portrait orientation).

Improved HDR + photo shooting

When manual control for HDR + is enabled, users can choose between "HDR + On" and "Enhanced HDR +". The first is always enabled by default and much faster, while the latter takes several seconds. To indicate that this wait is intentional, taking a picture in the latter mode will now cover an "Enhanced HDR + Shot" in the viewfinder.

How to update?

Google Camera 6.2 is being deployed through the Play Store. We do not publish APKs for download directly because of legal difficulties related to copyright and the possibility of deletion. In the meantime, this model is perilous given Android's bundled bundles of apps and dynamic Google Play delivery.

Thanks to JEB Decompiler, which benefit some disassembling of APK Insight.
