Earlier this month, we had revealed that Night Sight on Pixel 4 would be faster and would also allow astrophotography. Since then, a promotional offer from Google collaborates with this feature, and yesterday's leak of Google Camera 7.0 provides a quick overview of these Night Sight features.
Modding the Camera application that debuted on the Pixel 4, XDA could have a preview of the improvements made by Night Sight for shooting a dark sky on a Pixel 3 XL today. In particular, they have activated "new algorithms for the optimization of Night Sight sky segmentation, as well as longer exposure and better detection of tripods".
Once placed on a tripod, Night Sight can already take a longer exposure and improve performance. This seems to improve again this year, the lack of tremor allowing maximum exposure. Shooting also benefits from the "Infinite" focus mode of the 7.0 camera.
Watch XDA set of images, the difference with Google Camera 6.3 today is a more natural looking sky. The 7.0 moves are bluer and darker instead of having a dark green hue. Some stars are less visible, but the objects that appear appear once again much more natural and what your eyes would see. In the gallery below, the first image is taken with what is currently possible, while the next two are the edited images.
These photos will be enhanced only when they are captured on Pixel 4 and 4 XL with the final release of Google Camera 7.0's Night Sight. The above algorithms are probably optimized for this year's devices and will improve before launch, while the physical difference of a telephoto lens should improve the quality.
While watching the promotional video leaked, we see the possibility of zooming, the exposure controls and a mysterious third cursor in the viewfinder of the camera that has not yet been identified.
