Next year, Google Chat will become free before the eventual abandonment of classic Hangouts. The Google Workspace team today highlights upcoming changes that will start rolling out later this week.
The most important addition is “classic Hangout compatibility”. Over the next few weeks, Group Hangouts will appear in Google Chat. Migration will see conversations (and the people within them) appear first, while message history will follow shortly after.
At the same time, Google Chat 1: 1 messages, updated group chats, and untracked rooms will start showing up in Hangouts for domains where the classic app is still enabled. This transfer of conversations and recorded history from Hangouts is intended to provide a “smooth transition” and preserve context.
These changes also ensure compatibility between the classic version of Hangouts and Chat to make the migration of your users as seamless as possible.
Meanwhile, Chat is adding functionality to group conversations. New members, who can now be added, will be announced upon registration and will have access to the full history. An alternative is “Start New Chat” where existing members are moved to a new thread where other people can be added. These new options will begin rolling out on December 3.
Google is also changing Vault’s retention policies:
Note that these updated group conversations will also follow a different retention policy in Vault. If you set up custom chat retention rules in Google Vault, the scope of coverage will change. The rules set for “All Chat Rooms” (formerly known as “All Rooms”) will apply to existing chat rooms, as well as updated group messages and group messages that sync between chat and Hangouts.
