Google confirms that an update to the core algorithm, the December 2020 core update, is being rolled out today.

As mentioned in the announcement, Google’s advice regarding the update remains the same as it always has been.

This is the third update to the base calendar year algorithm. Some time has passed since the last base update, compared to the average time between these types of updates.

The last base update was rolled out on what the internet calls “Star Wars Day,” also known as May 4th.

It is likely that the pandemic has delayed the rollout of Google’s next major update. As more time than usual has passed, could that mean that the impact of today’s update will have more impact?

We won’t know the answer to that question today, or even tomorrow, as the process of deploying a major update can take weeks.
