Google may reveal its game streaming platform, dubbed Yeti, at the 2019 Games Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. 9to5Google, quoting a source familiar with the matter, announced the new Wednesday after Google announced Tuesday an opening speech at the GDC.
Rumors that Google was working on the project began circulating earlier in February, but little is known about it. Google's previously announced Project Stream technology is expected to be a hardware component that would allow streaming technology to access the show.
Google introduced Project Stream late last year until January. With a minimum Internet connection of 25 Mbps, players on Windows, Linux, Mac and Chrome OS could play a demonstration of Assains Creed Odyssey via the Chrome browser.
Computer hardware could eliminate the need for the computer browser to transfer service to televisions. It was previously expected to be little more than a Chromecast, but speculation now suggests that it would be more of a home console, with the support of the controller created by Google. It will supposedly include "in-game discussion" features, but we do not know if it would be voice or text.
The holy trinity of streaming?
Many gaming streaming services have been tried in recent years, but none have been successful. Although current Nvidia and Microsoft projects are underway, Google could be the first interesting solution.
The need of the market is there. Physical hardware – such as fast processors and powerful graphics – is expensive and needs to be upgraded frequently to support the latest games. This concern could potentially be avoided if Google offered a subscription service.
At the same time, streaming services such as Spotify and Netflix are expanding in their respective fields of music and video, which adds significant weight to the commercial viability of multimedia streaming.
With Yeti (or whatever its official name), does Google plan the service that would complete the holy trinity of streaming media services? We will have to wait to see.
