As part of Android Q Beta 3, Google has created 230 new emoticons, including 53 neutral in terms of genre. This means that the icon can represent both a man and a woman, without identification to a particular gender. To achieve this, Google has focused on designing a hairstyle that can be worn by women and men.

The company has also worked on other details to make fluid emojis, such as choosing a more neutral color for clothes or getting rid of accessories such as ties or bras. Interestingly, I think the result works well for most emojis, but some of them are confusing, which is probably what matters most.

These new emoticons will initially be available on Pixels in the coming days, before being extended to all Android devices. In the meantime, if you are trying to send one of them to a device that does not yet support neutral emoticons, it will simply choose a specific one.

Google is known for being an inclusive society, and being one of the first to publish a set of such emojis emphasizes it. Hope that other companies like Apple and Facebook will design theirs, so that such an initiative can be generalized.
