Google Dark Mode app summary: all that's available up to now

For years, the Android community has been calling for darker themes in apps and the system, while Google continues to slap more and more white themes virtually everywhere. Slowly but surely, however, we are seeing more Google black mode applications in tons of apps and services. Here are all of Google's black-mode apps available today, including Android, YouTube, Calendar, Chrome, and more.

Before entering the applications supporting dark mode, why do we care so much? This largely depends on your personal preferences, because many users simply prefer the appearance of a dark interface. In the last hours of the day, a largely dark theme also contributes to eyestrain. As Google has explicitly confirmed, a considerable advantage over Android is also the possibility of saving a lot of energy.

The reasons why apps are adopting a dark theme are going from the front, and we're happy to see Google's dark mode finally arrive on apps. Google Fit Dark Mode

In Google Fit v2.16 for Android, the company has set up a dark mode to break with the pristine white theme that the app has always used. The new theme can be applied manually via the settings of the application. In addition, it will respect the system settings in Android Q.

Like most other Google Apps, this is not a black only theme, but rather a gray color that also sees the accent colors green and blue brighten to better match the background more dark.

Google Photos dark mode

One of the most popular consumer services that Google has ever had is Photos, and in parallel with the arrival of Android Q, the application becomes a dark theme. Although it does not affect any of your photos, Google Photos dark mode gives the background a gray color, like many other Google apps. This also covers all the menus and settings of the application.

Unfortunately, however, the dark mode for Photos only applies to Android Q. At the moment, it does not work reliably on Android Pie, there is no dedicated setting and there is also no of change sign on iOS.

Google Sounds Dark Mode

While Google continues to implement dark mode in its system applications, the lesser known application of Google Sounds has been updated with the new theme. For those who do not know, this app is exclusively for Pixel owners and gives the ringtone interface a user-friendly makeover. The update of the dark mode arrived with version 2.1 of the application and respects the dark mode of the Android system. In particular, it has a real black theme.

Android Q Dark Mode

One of the biggest dark mode updates Google has made to date is Android. We see allusions to a dark system-wide theme for the mobile operating system for a long time, and Android Q is the place where it will finally debut. Although this update arrives publicly until 2019, the third beta gives us a good overview of the dark Android mode on the system scale.

In Android Q, a simple toggle in the quick settings menu activates the dark theme throughout the system. Once activated, users will see the effects of this theme on all aspects of the operating system. This includes essential system components, such as notifications, as well as applications that support this feature. Google has even integrated a developer option to force all applications to use a dark theme, if any.

Google Keep Dark Mode

Google Keep is a favorite application of many users, especially on Android. The simple note-taking app has a dark mode that is not triggered by the system as a whole, but rather by an "Enable Dark Theme" toggle in the application settings. The feature came in May as part of a server-side update on version 5.19.19.

The dark mode of Google Keep does not use a black theme, but several shades of dark gray.

The dark mode of Google Keep is also starting to be deployed in the web version of the application.

Dark mode of Google Drive

Although many of Google's Android apps are in a dark mode that works on all versions of the operating system, Google Drive is not one of them. One of the latest updates to the app has officially added dark mode support after months of using the test feature, but it only seems to work reliably on Android Q.

In this update, users should see Drive change theme between dark and light themes based on broader system settings. Some users report that the theme works on Android Pie with dark mode settings enabled, but the results vary from one user to the other. So far, this new dark mode seems only available on Android, but iOS and desktop Google Drive customers will probably have the same theme.

Google Calendar Dark Mode

If you want to follow your agenda without burning your eyes at night, Google Calendar finally has an official dark mode. This new mode is available as a built-in parameter to the Android Nougat application and newer. Just go to Settings> General> Theme will reveal the necessary rocker.

On Android Q, Google Calendar's dark mode respects the overall setting set for the entire system. In typical Google fashion, the app uses a few shades of gray to create the theme without losing its appearance. In particular, the colors of your events remain largely the same.

Dark mode of Google Chrome

In a few months, Google has begun to deploy a dark mode for Google Chrome in several areas. First, this includes both desktop applications. Under MacOS and Windows 10, there is a dark mode easily accessible, either already available, or about to go to prime time.

If you are using macOS, versions 73 and earlier of the Chrome browser must enable dark mode on Google's browser. To enable it, simply change your system by switching between dark and light modes. Windows, on the other hand, is still being deployed. Version 74 of Google Chrome activates the dark mode on Windows and also allows to match the theme of the system, but this sometimes remains a little vague.

As we know, Google is striving to gradually integrate black mode to all major Android applications. Chrome, of course, is one of them. Now this feature is starting to be available. Although it is still not available in the stable release, a recent Canary update revealed some indicators to change the theme. Once the flag is enabled, a dark switch will appear in the "General" section of Google Chrome in the Settings menu.

It also seems that the dark mode of Chrome for Android will darken the web pages.

Dark mode of the Google calculator

In version 7.6 of the Google Calculator app for Android, the company has added an official flip-flop in dark mode. The new flip-flop is simply located in the three-point overflow menu in the upper right corner of the application. Tap "Choose Theme" to display a small menu to manually switch between light and dark themes, as well as set it automatically according to the battery saver. Unfortunately, this mode does not respect the overall system option of what we can say.

Google Dark Fashion Help Center (Web)

In recent weeks, Google has extended dark mode support to its online help center. The company's extensive library of web-based tutorial and troubleshooting pages now support an official dark mode. This mode does not use real black, but rather a shade of dark gray with white text and blue hyperlinks.

There are two ways to enable this dark mode in the Google Help Center. On the one hand, you can change "/? Dark = 1 "at the end of any page you are on. However, the simplest method is to scroll down the page and press the toggle on the right side of the screen. The setting should remain in place even after you leave the page.

Dark Mode of Google Discover Feed

After observing ongoing tests for months, Google has finally added a dark theme to the discovery stream. Located on the leftmost home screen on many Android smartphones, including Google's pixel, the new dark mode of the Discover stream is one of those we've been waiting for.

Respecting the "night" mode of the system, the Discover theme is not a manual option. This will change with your screen background or depending on the display settings. In previous versions, the "dark" theme left users with white backgrounds for the text. It is therefore nice to see a good design finally available for everyone. If this option does not touch your device, try uninstalling the Google application and reinstalling / updating it to force the change.

Dark mode of Google Play Games

The most forgotten application of Google Play Games has also adopted a dark mode in its latest update. This one does not reflect the "night mode", but it triggers according to a manual setting

After the last update has been installed, go to the overflow menu. From there, go to Settings> Dark Theme and enable the setting. It should change immediately from that moment and, as usual, it extends to all application.

Google Phone Dark Mode

In the latest update of the Google Phone app, dark mode has finally been activated. Google has teased this arrival for some time and here it is finally arrived.

The dark mode of the Google Phone app concerns all parts of the interface, including the dialer, contacts, call history list and menus. All colors match other Google Material Dark themes. It should be noted that Google Phone and Google Contacts react to the dark mode setting of the other. If one is activated, the other also switches and vice versa.

The manual switch to turn on the dark mode in the Google Phone app is in Settings> Display Options> Dark Theme.

Dark mode of Google Contacts

With version 3.2 of Google Contacts, an official dark mode has been added to the application. This affects the entire interface of your contact list up to the details of the contact itself.

To enable dark mode on Google Contacts, you must have the latest version. Once updated, there should be a rocker "Enable Dark Theme" in the side menu. Otherwise, activating the "Night Mode" in the development options will automatically activate the dark theme of the contacts, presumably with other applications that will do the same.

YouTube Dark Mode

One of the Google apps at the forefront of the trend in dark mode is YouTube. The most important video service in the world has added an official dark mode to the web and an iOS application several months ago, and it has finally arrived on Android recently.

Once activated, YouTube's dark mode does not use a real black theme, but rather the same gray hue that we've seen in other dark-mode Google apps. The theme extends to just about every section of the desktop application and website, from comments to menus, and more. Dark messages in Android mode

The Google Messages Android app has quietly become a focal point of many of the company's new initiatives, and it's one of the first to use dark mode.

Dark Message mode also covers most applications, including the main interface, individual messages, and menus. Many accent colors are not changed when you change from white to dark, but that sounds good in both cases. Switching is as simple as accessing the three-dot menu in Messages and pressing "Enable Dark Mode".

Dark Gboard Mode

Google's Gboard is probably one of the best keyboard apps available for Android, and the addition of themes has been instrumental in this process. With themes, you can also activate a dark mode.

Of course, the activation of dark mode in Gboard is not as "official" as some of the other applications on this list. However, the end result is the same, if not better. By visiting the Gboard settings, you can visit the themes section from more than a dozen color themes. This includes 5 options that match the dark theme criteria, some even including true black themes ideal for OLED displays.

Google News Dark Mode

One of the most common cases of using a dark theme is the consumption of evening content. In a dark environment, the eyes are much less stressed. This is precisely why Google News is a prime target for a dark theme.

In a recent update, Google added a dark theme to Google News. Once activated, it reaches the entire interface and even has some customizations. In the settings, you can choose to turn on the dark mode at any time, automatically at night or when the battery saving mode is enabled. This confirms the company's findings that Dark technology allows for a longer battery life. It also respects the system theme starting with Android Q.

Google Maps Dark Mode (Navigation)

You will find another place where you will find a dark Google mode: Google Maps. This is not a dark mode at the application level, but only appears on the method of application navigation.

First, you'll always have a white theme in the app, but you can switch between the "Night" mode and leave it on at all times. This is particularly convenient at night, but it looks great at any time of the day. You will be able to leave the dark mode 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in the Android and iOS versions of the application. We have a practical tutorial below on how to do it.

Gmail Dark Mode (Web)

For years, Gmail has been supporting custom themes. Thanks to this, his web version has always supported a dark theme. Unfortunately, this is also one of the most limited options on this list.

When applied, the dark theme of Gmail on the web only covers the general interface. Once you have opened an email or clicked on a menu, you will still see white interface elements. We can hope that Google will update the experience to improve this, but for now, that's what it is.

To activate it, you have to press the settings button of the Gmail web interface and click on "Themes". Under the photo collection, you will see the default White theme, with the option "Dark" next to it. Just tap this option and click "Save."

Google Authenticator Dark Mode

If you use two-step authentication and you very Google Authenticator is a convenient way to keep track of the required codes. In a recent update, Google has added a dark mode to this application.

With a quick toggle in the overflow menu, you can enable dark Google mode for Authenticator. Like others on this list, this is not a really black theme, but it looks great and encompasses the entire interface, with the exception of a few menus.

Snapseed Dark Mode

Snapseed, Google's popular photo editing app, is another place to tilt a dark theme, which is especially useful when you're trying to focus on editing photos. It has the same appearance as Adobe.

To activate a dark theme in Snapseed, you must go to the application settings. The first option offers you a simple change of dark theme. If you enable this function, a dark version of the interface will appear immediately. It uses the same black as the other dark themes of Google.

YouTube Dark Mode (Web)

Although the standard YouTube app offers a dark mode on all platforms, YouTube TV only offers it on the web. This theme is, like YouTube, at the service level. It encompasses the entire interface, including all menus. Personally, this is one of my favorite dark themes because it fits the YouTube TV interface very well.

At present, it's unclear whether YouTube TV will extend this theme to its Android and iOS apps, but we can certainly expect it to arrive soon. To enable YouTube TV's dark mode, click your profile> settings> dark theme> enable / disable.

It is clear that Google does not slow down the addition of dark themes to its various applications, which represents a huge gain for all. And after? Well, we have some apps to watch for.
