In August, Google Discover began showing “short videos” to join webpages, regular videos, and later, AMP-based web stories. Ahead of the beta release in the US next month, Google is testing YouTube short films and other short form content in Discover.
The cards feature the YouTube playback logo in the upper left corner, while the video title and “YouTube” appear below. Immediately press to open the YouTube app and a new full screen player where you can like / dislike, view comments, share and view “More” – Description, Report or send comments. There is no search bar with the only control being play / pause. You can slide up to switch to a new short and down to go back.
When we first spotted the “Short Videos” carousel in Discover last year, it brought up clips from India’s TikTok Project Trell and the Google Area 120 Tangi project, which focuses on “quick videos” from 60 seconds.
Back in Discover, you have the option to “Don’t show this again” in the expand menu, while this carousel is displayed next to the AMP “Stories” carousel.
The carousel shows 10 videos, while there is some nuance to the content that appears here. “YouTube shorts” are up to 15 seconds long and are created using a “shorts camera” which is currently only available in India. Accessible from the Create menu in the bottom bar of the YouTube app, this new “short video maker” lets you select music, adjust speed, and set a hands-free countdown timer during the record.
However, YouTube encourages all creators to upload short, vertical videos that are no longer than 60 seconds and tagged with #Shorts in the title or description. These videos are also displayed in the special player UI described above, various carousels in the YouTube app and – now – Discover.
Google Discover is already showcasing regular YouTube content in full maps today, and today’s addition of Shorts is a natural extension that will help boost the beta format. In announcing that the Shorts camera and beta are coming to the United States, Google said, “Shorts YouTube player now sees more than 3.5 billion views per day worldwide.
Google Discover’s carousel of short videos with YouTube is still in testing and is not yet widely deployed.
