Google Drive for Android adds a dark manual theme setting

The dark theme of Google Drive for Android began to appear for some users with the redesign of the theme Material in April. Thanks to a new theme setting, it is now more widely available for users not running Android 10.

In Settings, a new "Choose Theme" menu presents the three standard options for Android apps: Dark, Bright and Defined by Battery Saver. It is set to default, but users now have the option to manually enable the darker appearance.

The dark theme of Google Drive is quite simple and shifts the background from a bright white to a dark gray. Lighter shades are used for the search field, while the lower bar retains its transparency. A softer blue accent color is also used, with icons for file types benefiting from the same clearer processing. The "Home" feed is still pretty bright because of the preview of the documents.

Standalone Android clients for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides have not yet been updated with a dark theme at this point. They only reorganized their Material theme last month. Hopefully a darker look is expected and it will not take four months.

Google Drive's dark theme setting has been slowly expanding in recent weeks. It should be widely available with version 2.19.332.01.40 or later, and comes after the launch of Android 10 on Pixel devices yesterday.
