A lawsuit alleging Google Chrome is tracking users even in incognito mode has been given the green light after a judge ruled against Google’s dismissal request.
A class action lawsuit, originally filed in the United States in June 2020 and claiming $ 5 billion in damages, alleges that the browser allows websites to collect personal information about users even while browsing in Incognito mode.
The lawsuit alleges that Google tools such as Google Analytics, Google Ad Manager and others continue to collect personal information, even though they have instructed them not to do so using the browser in private mode.

Google has pledged to defend itself “vigorously” by refuting the allegations made in the lawsuit.
“Incognito mode in Chrome allows you to browse the internet without your activity being logged on your browser or device. As we make it clear whenever you open a new incognito tab, websites may be in able to collect information about your browsing activity during your session, ”Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said. Unimpressed by Google’s argument, Judge Lucy Koh sided with the plaintiffs, noting that Google did not notify users of the data collection in private browsing mode.
The timing of the lawsuit is interesting because it comes on the heels of the search engine making the right noise to defend the privacy of its users against advertisers. The company is committed to standing up for its users to help them protect their privacy by phasing out tracking cookies and launching the Privacy Sandbox initiative to advocate for open standards to improve online privacy.
