Google will spend $ 170 million to settle allegations that its YouTube video service has violated US federal law by collecting personal information on children, announced Wednesday the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the United States.
YouTube had been accused of following children's channel viewers – using cookies obtained without parental permission – to broadcast millions of dollars in targeted ads to those viewers.
The settlement with the FTC and the New York State Attorney General's office, which will receive $ 34 million, is the largest since a law banning the collection of information about children less than 13 years old came into force in 1998. The law was revised in 2013 to include "cookies". ", which are used to follow the viewing habits on the Internet.
Eenah Freed, chief correspondent for technology at the Axios information site, said that the current Youtube system has too many loopholes allowing the collection of information about children.
