Google gives Pixel 4 XL an extra year of free repairs for power issues

If your out-of-warranty Pixel 4 XL has issues, you may be able to get a free repair. Google recently published a support page describing a “one-year extended repair program” for the larger of its two flagship products of 2019. Eligible people can receive free repair for up to one year after the start. ‘expiration of their original warranty. As to who is covered by this program, Google points out “certain problems related to food”.

Specifically, the company states that these are the issues that “can” get a free repair:

  • A Pixel 4 XL that can’t be turned on
  • Pixel 4 XL randomly restarts or shuts down without any user action
  • Charging issues with the AC adapter
  • Wireless charging issues
  • The battery of a Pixel 4 XL drains “much faster than when you start using it”

This is a fairly wide range of potential ways to qualify for the repair program. But Google warns that if there are other major issues with your phone (like a damaged screen) that “prevent” the free repair, those will need to be fixed first – and for a fee.

Pixel 4 XL owners can bring their device to a uBreakiFix store to see if it qualifies for a free patch. According to Android Police, the repair staff at these locations are very familiar with the situation. You can also start the repair process directly with Google to see if your issue is covered.

The extended repair program is available in the United States, Canada, Singapore, Japan and Taiwan. Google specifies that yes do not apply in Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain or UK. In fact, the Pixel 4 XL bought in these countries already have a longer manufacturer warranty of two years.
