After spotting the feature under development for the first time in September last year, Google plans to prepare to roll out “access” roles for household members in the Google Home app.
Being able to share your Google Home with other users comes in handy for families and roommates, ensuring everyone has the ability to interact with smart home devices from their phones and speakers. However, this has long been a unique approach. That will change soon, however, with the arrival of new “access” roles in the Google Home app.
People at Android Police noticed that the Google Home app for Android is at least rolling out the UI for this change, although nothing appears to be fully functional at this point. In the “Household” settings, you can see a new “Access Summary” page, which lists “Access details” and “Devices”. At the moment, the “details” page is empty but marks everyone as a manager. There is also a device list that shows all connected devices in the home, but there are no options for that yet. Google offers a small explanation of this feature on the page, but presumably this paragraph may change when settings are swapped.
Everyone in this house can see all activity and access all devices and settings, including devices added later. They can also change all settings in the home and add and remove devices, services and people in that home.
Presumably, this waits for further server-side changes from Google before the roles are fully functional. Either way, it looks like a useful new option!
