A former US ambassador wants Google to do to Telegram what it did to Parler.
Marc Ginsberg continued the On Monday, Alphabet Inc.’s unit, asking a California court to ask it to remove the The Telegram Messenger app from the Google Play Store because it facilitates violence, extremism and anti-Semitism.
Telegram, particularly following the murder of George Floyd and the inauguration of Joe Biden as president, has been used to threaten, encourage and coordinate racist violence, claims Ginsberg, Bill Clinton’s ambassador to Morocco. He pointed out that after the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, Google suspended Talk about its App Store because a number of its right-wing users have expressed support for the siege and continued violence.
“Google has not taken any action against Telegram comparable to the one it took against Parler to force Telegram to improve its content moderation policies,” said Ginsberg’s lawsuit. He filed a similar complaint Jan. 17 against Apple Inc., which also removed Speak from its App Store after the riot.
Google did not immediately respond to an email request for comment. Telegram also did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment. Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, said last week that company moderators had deleted hundreds of posts in the wake of the Capitol Riot and that calls for violence would not be tolerated.
‘Talking Refugees’
Amazon.com Inc. raised its own concerns about violent content on Talk by removing the web hosting service’s listing from the platform. Measures taken against Parler, as well as the ban on former President Donald Trump and others Twitter Inc. and Facebook Inc. has sparked a wide debate over the control and responsibilities of the speech technology industry.
A channel on Telegram is dedicated to “Talking Refugees”. Some Telegram users have urged subscribers to drop plans for a second protest in Washington in favor of Trump in favor of surprise attacks across the country, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit also accuses Telegram of serving as a platform for the sale of illegal and controlled substances, including LSD and cocaine.
Ginsberg, who is Jewish and raised in Israel, says in the lawsuit that he was the target of two assassination attempts because of his religious beliefs. Its Coalition for a the Web, also listed as a plaintiff in the lawsuit, says he is pushing social media platforms to end their tolerance for anti-Semitism and empower extremist groups.
