In October, Google officially discontinued support for its virtual reality platform with Android 11. Daydream no longer receives updates and can no longer access the Google Play Store or other VR discovery features.
Update 2/15: The discovery experience within the Daydream app for Android and virtual reality has been quietly restored by Google.
Original 2/8: Over the weekend, Daydream users on Reddit (h / t Mishaal rahman) noticed a “Cannot sign in to Google at this time” error when opening the Play Store on the device, while the app’s “Discover” home page displays the message “We’re sorry , we encountered a problem”. None of the buttons “Try again” does not reload the promotional list of VR applications and other experiences correctly.
That said, you can still install virtual reality apps, like YouTube VR, from your phone’s Google Play Store. They, along with the services already on your device, will appear in the Library tab and be launched. This is in line with Google’s advice from last year that “many third-party Daydream apps and experiences may still be available as stand-alone apps.”
We don’t expect users to lose account information or functionality of third-party apps because Daydream is no longer supported by Google.
It’s part of Google’s continued slowdown of its first foray into virtual reality. The most recent event saw the open-source Tilt Brush drawing app last month:
