Google is preparing to shut down its My Maps app on Android in October in favor of web app-only support.
About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” article, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an app that Google downloaded from the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we can see different lines of code in this clue about possible future functionality. Keep in mind that Google may or may not offer these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be flawed. However, we will try to allow those that are about to be completed to show you what they will look like if they are shipped. With that in mind, read on.
Stopping My Maps for Android
Since 2007, Google has offered My Maps as a way to create personalized maps using data connected to Google Maps or even from data imported from other sources, such as a spreadsheet. These maps can then be shared with others as a link or integrated into a website, making the information available to those who need it.
At the start of the pandemic, My Maps saw a resurgence in use, allowing groups to share test sites or simply show where to get free internet access. That said, the app has been neglected, seeing very few updates over the years. The latest update to My Maps – version 2.2.1.5, now rolling out through the Play Store – is the first since 2019.
In the update, we see that Google is preparing a warning that the My Maps Android app is going to shut down, leading people to use the mobile web version of the app.
My Maps migrates to the web
The Android My Maps app will no longer be available after October 15, 2021. Use the My Maps mobile web to create and share maps. Learn more about My Maps Mobile Web
According to the warning, the closure of My Maps for Android will take place on October 15. However, the message is not yet live in the app itself, and the attached support page is not available, leaving Google with the option of changing the schedule.
Elsewhere in the app we also find the message that will appear once My Maps for Android has been closed completely.
My Maps is now on the web
The Android My Maps app is no longer available. Use the My Maps mobile web to create and share maps.
Although both messages specify that it is the Android app that is closing, it is quite possible that the iOS app for My Maps will also be closed in October. This is far from the first time that Google has removed a native application in favor of its alternative to the mobile web, Google AdSense meeting the same fate.
Thanks to JEB Decompiler, which benefits some APK Insight teardowns.
