One of the elements of Google’s latest design language is having your profile picture appear in the top right corner of every app to emphasize how you’re signed in. This Google Account Chooser is being changed to launch a full screen interface.
You can always slide your finger up and down to quickly change accounts. However, tapping on your avatar will launch a full screen interface instead of the previous floating pane which was as large as needed. As part of the removal of the navigation drawer, which conflicts with gesture navigation, Google’s apps have increasingly placed settings here.
This is mostly the same user interface as before, and the difference between showing full or hiding the list of connected accounts continues. The links to “Privacy Policy” and “Terms of Service” have been moved down. This is a rather odd change that removes the context by hiding the app you were in before.
The only device where this tweak is deployed is to see all affected proprietary apps and use the full screen interface. The examples in this article focus on Maps, but we’ve also come across it in Gmail, Drive, Play Store, and the Google app.
Google Maps for iOS has a similar effect, but after tapping on the profile avatar, you first receive the old UI. It’s only as you scroll that the selector expands to fill the entire display with nifty accompanying animation.
So far, the full-screen Google account switcher is not widely deployed on Android and does not appear on any other device yet.
