Google is joining the wave of tech companies returning to the office and plans to hire U.S. employees in April.
Workers can return voluntarily or continue to work remotely until September, the company confirmed. Reopenings will be based on vaccine availability and coronavirus trends. Google does not require vaccines for office workers, but “strongly encourages”.
“Because the situation remains dynamic, we continue to take a phased and deliberate approach to safely getting more people back to the office where we can,” Google said.
The company wouldn’t say if the Bay Area offices will reopen.
Google is one of the largest companies in the region, with more than 20 million square feet of office space in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. The company is investing an additional $ 1 billion in real estate in California this year and has more than 52,000 employees in the state.
Facebook is also reopening its offices in April and Uber opened its new headquarters this week. Wells Fargo has extended remote working until at least September 6 for most employees.
“Remote work was intended to be a temporary arrangement to provide our workforce with flexibility during uncertain times,” Google said. He plans to bring employees back to the office three days a week in the fall to test a hybrid working model.
After September 1, the company will require employees to request remote work for up to 14 days per year. Google will provide meals, snacks and amenities “where possible”. However, Facebook does not offer meals or shuttles at the moment.
