Pour one so that another Google service is closed. Google Bookmarks is a service that has been around for a long time, since its launch in 2005. All major web browsers include bookmarks, and with the advent of cloud sync, your bookmarks can stay the same on all devices. Google Bookmarks, however, is completely separate from browser bookmarking, even Google Chrome bookmarking. It is a barebone service that allows users to bookmark links or notes and access them from any device or computer. Now the service is closed in September.
Unlike other Google services that are being removed, I don’t think we will miss bookmarks much. I didn’t remember that it still existed: I quickly took a look and apparently I haven’t used it myself since 2010. The service itself also looks very dated, even today, with the UI looking a lot like the old Holo. days. And Google isn’t even making a big deal of removing it. It doesn’t have an Android app or even an actual logo.
If my last Google Bookmarks item was a kid, they would start 6th grade next year.
But while most of us might not use it, removing it might actually have an effect on some apps that we actually use in our daily lives. As noted by 9to5Google, Google Maps Favorite Locations are actually kept in Google Bookmarks, and the service being shut down could have an effect on this, given the synchronization of Favorite Locations and Google Bookmarks.
The service will be phased out by September 30, so within the 2 month period from the date of publication of this article, Google may actually transfer the list of starred locations from Google Maps. If they don’t, however, that list could be removed once October arrives. However, all is not bad news. If you’re worried about the favorites list going away (which isn’t something Google said would happen), there is the “Export Bookmarks” option in Google Bookmarks, or you can toggle your locations favorites to another list since only the “Starred” list syncs with bookmarks.
Aside from this specific side effect, I don’t think we will miss him much.
