Google launches the application WifiRttScan on the Play Store to test the positioning in the interior

Android 9 Pie introduced support for indoor positioning using 802.11mc. Wi-Fi Round Trip Time (RTT) technology allows the system and applications to "measure the distance to RTT-enabled Wi-Fi access points." Google released this week a "WifiRttScan app" for developers via the Play Store.

The location obtained by GPS is not accurate in closed interior settings. In the past, Google had considered tags as an alternative, with its latest attempt at indoor positioning using the IEEE 802.11mc Wi-Fi protocol. The accuracy can be between 1 and 2 meters if a device is capable of measuring distance up to three access points or more. The RTT APIs of Android 9 and later allow any application to take advantage of the positioning inside.

Use cases are to help people navigate shopping malls, stadiums, conferences or other large venues. In addition to navigation in buildings, other new experiences include:

  • Fine granularity-based localization service: unambiguous voice control (for example, "turn on this light")
  • Location Information: (such as "Are there any special offers for this product?")

Posted through the "Developed with Google" Play Store account on April 10, this app is aimed at "developers, vendors, universities, etc." as a "search, demonstration, and test tool." It was also published eight months ago by GitHub. but it is now more widely available.

Developers, OEMs and researchers can use this tool to validate distance measurements allowing the development of positioning, browsing and context-aware applications based on the WiFi-RTT API.

The 2.5 MB (and Wi-Fi RTT) application requires users to grant location to the location, a list of RTT-compatible access points through SSID and BSSID. Tap to open a granular list of access point results showing range (in meters) and latitude / longitude / altitude, if applicable.

The WifiRttScan app is available on the Play Store and requires a supported Android 9+ device.
