We have known for a long time that Google offers Android users in Europe a different experience than international customers. This is because the European Union really wants Google to behave a lot less like a monopoly than before. Google lost three major antitrust cases in the region, including one on Android.
The European Commission has imposed Google three fines of several billion fine, which Google has disputed. But the company has agreed to make changes to its business models, changes that also affect its mobile operating system. We now know what changes are in place for Android in Europe.
In a new blog post, Google explained that Android users in Europe would have search applications and browser options and showed the world what these prompts would look like.
The new screens will appear the first time a user opens Google Play after receiving an update. We are looking at two screens, one for searching and the other for browsers, as follows.
Each screen will present to the user five applications, including those installed. Applications that are not installed will appear according to their popularity, but they will appear in random order.
A third screen will be shown to users when they install a search application. Google will ask them if they want to change Chrome's default search engine the next time the browser opens.
These screens will appear both on existing Android phones and on new Android phones in Europe in the coming weeks, Google explained, and their implementation will "evolve" over time.
