Google Maps now highlights photos of the most popular restaurants

As spotted by Taylor Wimberley on Twitter and confirmed by several other users, the update adds a new tab to the Menu page of the Cards list of a restaurant called Popular Dishes:

The new feature seems to sweep restaurant reviews to find the commonly mentioned dish names, then add the photos included with these reviews in the Popular tab. Whether it is done automatically or that human beings are involved is not clear at the moment, but a fully automated system would likely make mistakes, the opinion of someone mentioning a dish and the picture showing another. That said, Google has an extensive image recognition technology (as in Google Photos, for example) that could be used here.

9to5Google Note that although you can suggest changes to the information displayed, as with anything on Maps, there are several dishes that have no names because the person displaying them did not contain a caption. This is not very useful when customers notice something delicious and want to order it, but they can still show the photo to the server.

The Google Maps update has only been deployed on some phones at the time of writing and is probably being tested. If it works well, we'll probably see it soon in the main Maps application, bringing Google Maps closer to its competitors in restaurants, Yelp and TripAdvisor.
