Google Maps on Android Automotive Gets Better EV Charging

[ad_1]

The two cars Android Automotive currently powers are both electric. Before the Google Dashboard experience became available to more vehicles, the built-in Google Maps app is improving the way you find EV charging stations.

Charging possibilities are an important consideration when planning trips given the range of electric cars today and the availability of stations depending heavily on where you are traveling.

On shorter trips, Maps will let you choose from a list of available chargers, with Google noting speed and network. For example, you can see nearby destinations to multitask while your vehicle is charging.

For trips that require at least two charging stops, Google will specify the stations and charging levels in order to “minimize the total travel time”. The company boasts of new routing algorithms that it has developed based on graph theory that takes into account both driving and charging time. A solution had to be created that would work on the many vehicles that will soon be available in the automotive sector.

Taking into account the different characteristics of each EV (such as weight, maximum battery level, type of plug, etc.), the algorithm identifies which of the edges [route] are feasible for the EV considered and which are not.

During this process, Google also takes battery consumption into account, with Google Maps keeping detailed information about the route (length, elevation and slope). For the end user, this routing takes less than 10 seconds.

Today’s latest innovation will show the payment methods accepted at stations in 12 European countries. Improvements to the Google Maps EV charging stops on Android Automotive are being rolled out.
