Google’s Nest Hub may receive an update for the first time since its debut in 2018. The company has registered a new “interactive device” with the Federal Communications Commission that will include a display, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and one with what appears to be Google’s Soli radar gesture technology.
Taken together, it looks like Google has a new smart home device on the way; as 9to5Google points out that the classification of “interactive devices” is similar to what Google uses for its other smart devices such as the Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max, Nest Mini, Nest Wifi and the original Nest Audio.
The addition of Zigbee – a popular smart home network standard – would help integrate what the new device is into smart home setups even better. And Soli technology has already appeared in smart home devices from Google, like the entry-level Nest Thermostat released last year, which uses the technology to detect nearby users.
According to the FCC filing, the unknown smart device is rated for the same wider frequency range of 58-63.5 GHz as the Pixel 4, which unlike the Nest Thermostat used Soli technology for its Motion gestures. Sense. It’s easy to imagine that Google is using radar technology for motion gestures on a next-gen version of its smaller Nest Hub, which lacks the built-in camera that the larger Nest Hub Max already uses for similar gestures. .
Finally, the Nest Hub is one of Google’s oldest smart home products (launched October 2018). It actually predates the use of the Nest brand for Google’s smart home products – the device was first released as the Google Home Hub – so it’s likely due to an update.
Unfortunately, the FCC filing doesn’t reveal many other details about the mysterious product. But if Google is already working on regulatory registration, we might not have too much time to wait.
