After adding a “Troubleshoot” menu last month, Google Meet now offers a “green room” pre-video call to “quickly preview how you’ll appear to others before entering.” Available on the desktop web, it allows you to check device and network status.
You can use this new feature to confirm that devices are properly configured and patched, to verify that your network connectivity is good, and to understand the impact of noise cancellation on your audio (if available for your account).
Before joining a meeting, there is a new “Check your audio and video” button below your video stream. This “green room” opens a nearly full screen camera window and lists “Your devices” below. You can choose between different microphones, speakers and cameras. It allows you to preview the best configuration and capture:
- An unintentionally deactivated microphone
- A secondary display monitor with a missing headphone or speaker connection
- Other audio issues, such as poor sound quality, sound too loud, or your microphone amplifying background noise
If any issues are found, Google Meet will provide tips and troubleshooting steps, such as “allow your browser to use the microphone or camera.”
This Google Meet video preview is being rolled out for the following users, as well as for personal accounts in our testing:
Available for Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus, as well as G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education and Nonprofits customers
