Last week, Google’s new design language began to roll out widely on Gmail for Android in some countries. As part of this launch, Google notably reduced the Material You bottom bar in Gmail.
Common Material You elements in proprietary applications (especially Workspace clients) include a pill-shaped search box, rounded square FAB, and a higher bottom bar, which uses a pill-shaped indicator to highlight the tab you are currently viewing.
This new navigation element was used during Gmail’s first redesign, but has now been shortened as part of the wider rollout. Spacing has also been removed from the top and bottom, as well as between the icon and the text label. As a result of this narrowing, you don’t see any more emails, but the Compose button goes down slightly. Meanwhile, the tap / wave animation has been removed.
The end result is a lower bar that is not that different from what came before. While the larger UI created a stark visual contrast, it didn’t really change the experience of using and browsing apps.

Gmail is the only Material You app today that has changed its bottom bar. Google Phone, Drive, and Photos still retain the biggest element, although these redesigns are not yet widely available. As such, it’s too early to tell if Google has changed its mind on the higher lower bar as a result of real-world feedback.
