Various background services and apps that don’t appear in the launcher include Google’s mobile operating system. The data restore tool that allows you to restore information while setting up a new Android phone now appears in the Play Store.
This data recovery tool has long been part of the Android experience, but it’s only in recent days that Google has given it a public Play Store listing. This is in part due to the rollout of an update for the app.
This system app helps you restore data from your old phone using cable or cloud backup. The app is already installed on your Android device.
However, the option to download the new version only appears if you open the list manually. It does not appear in the usual “Manage apps and devices” list. Besides visiting the link directly, you can search for it. If the screenshots in the list sound familiar to you, they are identical to the assets of the “data transfer tool,” which was listed in 2017, on Pixel phones.
According to our quick tests, the “Restore” app is not preinstalled on Pixel devices running Android 11 – and cannot be downloaded after the fact with the Play Store which throws an error. Meanwhile, it’s already available on everything else and was included with the beta of Android 12 – complete with Material You and dark theme touches.
When opening the app, some users may get the second screenshot seen above. Others just get an “Unable to copy” error. Overall, the public availability of this app does not seem to allow you to restore after the initial setup process.
The Data Restore Tool has over 1 billion installations, with version 1.0.382048734 being the latest version. Based on the date of 550 notices, this public listing took place last week.
