Over the past few months, the Google Phone app has been made available to non-Pixel devices, and we’ve also seen testing for a new Caller ID announcement feature. Amid all the changes, Google is apparently working on rebranding the app as well.

According to an article on Reddit (via ChromeUnboxed), the Google Phone app could be renamed Google Call, with a new multicolored icon to start. The renowned app was apparently spotted in a YouTube ad. The ad itself touts the phone app’s ability to reliably notify calling users.

The ad included a link to the Phone by Google app in Google Play.

For better or worse, some of Google’s biggest services have undergone an overhaul this year. Google Suite has been rebranded as Google Workspace to better meet the needs of business and the work crowd. But more importantly, many of the company’s most recognizable icons, including Gmail and Google Calendar, have been completely redesigned. The Google Call phone icon will apparently feature the same multicolored design.

The YouTube ad for Google Call featured a link to the Phone by Google app in Google Play. The current list still has the old phone icon with no other visible rebranding.

It is not known when Google Phone will become Google Call, or if it was just a mistake. Regardless, the Google Phone app has been the target of a lot of really cool features over the past couple of years, from Call Screen to Hold For Me to improved spam protection.

Once the name change is official, we’ll be sure to let you know.
