In recent weeks, Google has brought its Android dialer to non-Pixel devices and changed the Play Store listing. Now it looks like an upcoming name change will give the Phone app a new logo and a new name: “Google Call”.
A YouTube ad for the Phone by Google app – as it’s now officially known on the Play Store – saw the light of day today. It has a link to download and highlights a “reliable caller ID” feature. The included screenshot – which exists today – doesn’t show anything out of the ordinary.
However, the top right corner of the ad features a new logo. It’s a generic phone icon – identical to the new Voice logo, but all four Google colors are used. This is followed by “Google Call”.
This can be the new name of the app, as well as its icon on the home screen. The current shape uses a slightly different shape and is placed on a blue background.
This new icon is not live on Google Play or any other site. This would come after the big name change of Workspace and all the applications under this umbrella. The Phone app, along with Messages and Duo, is run by the same executive who oversees the productivity suite.
As such, it’s possible that all of these mainstream communications products will also have a new look awaiting announcement. That said, a new name to go with it would really be a departure.
However, this name change would quite reflect all the intelligence Google has in the Phone app today from Call Screen and Hold for Me, as well as the spam warning and search.
